Month in Review for June 2017

Leia pretending to be cute and innocent in an Independence Day dress
June wasn't that great thanks to a sudden absence of a medication I've been on for years, but I still managed to get some reading done while dealing with my increase in pain. I hope to review more than a few of them, especially Hello, Sunshine, which will be out in a week or so.

Favorite of the Month: The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo, which was so refreshingly magical to read.
Least Favorite of the Month: Unfortunately it was my review request book, Hello, Sunshine by Laura Dave. I generally don't like contemporary fiction, or at least the endings of contemporary fiction books. I'm sure others would find this book more to their taste.
Most Interesting of the Month (or Book I Learned the Most From): The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo again, because everything about it I found interesting.

Planning to Read This Month:

I'm reading both Age of Swords (The Legends of the First Empire #2) by Michael J. Sullivan (to be published July 25th) and Parable of the Sower (Earthseed #1) by Octavia E. Butler- and that's all I'm sure I will finish this month.

Happy Reading and Have a Happy and Safe (U.S.) Independence Day!

  1. Leia is such a doll. Ugh on the meds change up. That is always such a plans changer when it's going on. I have had Ghost Bride on my Kindle for a long time. You reminded me to put it on my Goodreads tbr. Maybe that will help me remember to read it. Why did I think that SciFi challenge was in August? I need to get to one of my Octavia Butler's. I kind of over indulged on ARCs, but after August I should be able to get some personal reading done.I hope you had a nice holiday. :)

    1. Yeah, I still haven't gotten them back, so maybe my primary care doctor might be able to convince my insurance to give me them? Who knows?
Ha! I'm glad you have it. The Ghost Bride is one of the better books I've read this summer.
I'm glad you'll have time for personal reading after August. Sometimes ARCs are really good, but sometimes you get tired of all the new stuff and need something more familiar. I hope your July goes well!

  2. That really sucks on the meds. I hope things will be better on that front in July.
I've had The Ghost Bride in my hands so many times in the bookstore but keep putting it back for some reason.

    1. I hope to get them back soon, but who knows with the insurance.
The Ghost Bride is definitely worth getting if you like magical realism steeped in Chinese culture.

  3. Hey there! Just found your post in my twitter feed. And I think I've recently followed you? Maybe during my blog hop? I must have missed visiting you! :)
I remember reading The Ghost Bride several years ago. The living hell was advertised out of that book! But somehow it disappointed me, perhaps because it was marketed slightly differently and I had expectations. I still liked it, but felt a little let down, I remember. Glad you liked it though :)

    1. I'm on Twitter probably more than I'm on my blog these days! I'm having a mini-vacation from religiously posting so I don't get all blogged out.

I went into the Ghost Bride thinking it would be exactly like another book I'd read about the ghost bride traditions, but luckily it wasn't. It sometimes helps to go into a book without expectations- or, at least that's what I think I'm beginning to learn from all these books I have high expectations of that are letting me down.
