For me, as a reader of mostly fantasy, historical, sci-fi, or biography, this was a bit outside my comfort zone to start with, and then throw in a pensive plot and I was pretty much uninvolved as a reader. I am racking my brain trying to remember. It is too bad the cultural aspect wasn't stronger in the novel and the book seemed unfocused.
