SFF: The 5 Supernatural Creatures/Beings You Prefer Reading About

Sunday Fun Five #64:

#64: The 5 Supernatural Creatures/Beings You Prefer Reading About
For the 23rd of October: #65: The 5 Books You Read in 2016 That Were More Addictive Than Pumpkin Pie Spice-d Things

A Countdown of
The 5 Supernatural Creatures/Beings You Prefer Reading About

5. The Fey/Fairies
Often beautiful, often mischievous, fairies seldom make the cut to adult fiction, unless it's in some vampired-up transformation. Still, I like having fairies and the Fey in my books, whether they happen to be tiny or more human sized.

4. Werewolves/Shifters
I was slow to like the whole werewolf/shifter book genre, as I often found they were too violent/animalistic for my liking, especially when it comes to paranormal romances. However, the few I read prior to the Kate Daniels series and the Others series didn't poison my opinion of the books enough that I wouldn't read them- a good thing, as those are now two of my most favored series.

3. Unicorns
Though they are seldom found in adult titles, I love a good unicorn book. This addiction may stem from my childhood fascination with anything horse-related. Horse + horn on head, therefore, is even better.

2. Vampires
Vampires are my old standby. I like the idea of creatures that might have to kill just to survive (even if it's for an unholy amount of time).

1. Dragons
Something about critters that can (usually) breathe fire and fly away just makes my imagination soar. Whether they're on the winning side, or they happen to be on the "bad" side, I enjoy any book with dragons featured as characters/obstacles.

Which supernatural beings and creatures do you enjoy reading about?

  1. I don't go in for were-anything, and I am not much for tinkling little fairies, but I love all the rest of your choices including the Fae!

    1. I think fairies can add a little sass to some rather mundane worlds. Of course, I also watched The Fairly Odd Parents while growing up, which does add a nice spin on the whole tiny fairy thing. ;)

  2. I love books about the Fae! Whether they're the nice kind, or more sinister, they add the perfect magical and mischievous element to fantasy worlds :) I also love reading about dragons! I remember reading Eragon for the first time and loving it. Since then, I've been trying to seek out more stories with dragons (which always leads to more fantasy in general, which I welcome with open arms!). Lovely list, Litha!

    1. I think with the Fae, there's a lot of room to play with the mythology behind it, which makes it more interesting to read for us veteran fantasy people. I think my favorite dragon-book is still The Hero and the Crown- and the dragons are the villains in that one. Thanks, Laura!

  3. Great topic! I have to agree with many of these. Anything having to do with magic is going to attract my attention and hold onto it. Especially if it involves fairies and shifters. For me, I would add witches. I haven't read many books with unicorns in them, I'm afraid.

    1. I did read part of one book with supposed magic in it that I couldn't bear to read any longer- Tathea (Tathea #1) by Anne Perry. However, the majority of magical books have my vote. I also enjoy witches, but centaurs also come to mind (I think because of my horse obsession). The reason you don't find many books with unicorns in them is because unicorns are so rare that the only books to cater to unicorn lovers are often found in the children's and middle grade section. ;)

  4. I agree with this whole list. Love the fey (prefer them to be dangerous and unpredictable, but lighthearted and mischievous too- there's room for all kinds) and werewolves (I don't read shifter PNR's but I like a good were tale). And of course dragons! :)

Unicorns are nice but don't show up much. I think maybe authors aren't sure what to do with them. I'd like to see a take where they're still good but kinda dangerous and wild, and in combination with a good fey story that could be fun! Maybe lol. I wish there was more adult fantasy (or heck even YA fantasy) with unicorns.

    1. Dangerous fey can be pretty tricky! Recently, I've begun to notice more shifters in general fantasy novels, and not just the typical werewolf type. I think animal shifters make great characters.

I think people assume unicorns are a kid thing, but honestly, if you can make them feel less like they're from a Disney fairytale and more menacing like dragons, more people would be interested in reading about them. They're a rare breed. ;)
