Month in Review for April 2017: Flowers and Snow Showers

Some of my minion/seedling army
April started out with mild temperatures and left with a few snow showers, which is unusual for my neck of the woods. After I had my May 2nd appointment with the neuromuscular neurologist, I was a bit put out to hear I'd need more testing and to have more doctors look at my case (particularly the way I walk, which the neurologist videotaped because it's unique). I wasn't really surprised, though, with the slow but steady pace that my diagnosis is proceeding. Anyway, I'm looking forward to more flowers in May.

Favorite of the Month: Bound by Flames (Night Prince #3) by Jeaniene Frost because there is a particularly hilarious revelation at the end of the book.
Least Favorite of the Month: Skin Deep (Legion #2) by Brandon Sanderson (the Benevolent)- because I have very high expectations of this author (as one of my faves), and this was a big letdown.
Most Interesting of the Month (or Book I Learned the Most From): The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare by G.K. Chesterton because this book is set in a period of time in which anarchy and its supporters is the big fear, and I quite frankly didn't know much about anarchy as a political movement before reading this. I gave it two stars because it ended very strangely in a pseudo philosophical way that I didn't appreciate.

Planning to Read This Month:

So far, I've already read 5 books in May (which surprised even me!). I need to read more diverse books, as those tend to make my ratings go up. As you may have noticed, save for my 3 rereads (which were the three 4 Star books), my ratings have been rather flat of late. I'm hoping with the increased rate of reading, I'll be able to find some excellent books again!

Happy Reading!

  1. I'm sorry to hear you haven't been having the best luck finding those gem books. It always makes for a boring month when every book just feels meh. Congratulations on reading 5 books already, though! I think I've been slacking off a bit; I'm already 4 books behind schedule on my Goodreads challenge and have only read 1 book this month so far. Keep on being awesome, Litha! :)

    1. Sorry about your Goodreads challenge, Laura. :( You'll probably catch up over the summer though- that's what I always used to do.
Yeah, I need to find some awesome books stat, but I'm worried that if I read some by my favorite authors that they'll also be low rated by me, and then I'd feel awful. So, I'm reading relative unknowns to me to spare their feelings. ;)

  2. Hey Litha! I noticed on Goodreads that a lot of your recent reads have been low rated, it stinks hitting a slump like that! It's great that you've picked up your reading pace again though, you've knocked out more than I have so far this month. :) I hope you find some goodies soon, maybe a new book from NetGalley? Octavia E. Butler's Earthseed books are up there, could be a series to check out if you haven't read the two already. Either way, I hope you have an awesome rest of the month!

    1. Yes, it does! I have a feeling I may hit an excellent book sooner or later, but I definitely hope for sooner. I have a book from NetGalley that I accidentally agreed to review (apparently by clicking a link) but my main request (for Age of Swords) hasn't come through yet- hopefully I haven't been put on the naughty list for my slow-blogging ways. I do have Earthseed, but I am saving those for the summer/fall (or that's what I'm telling myself) because that's when I read them last year. I hope you have a wonderful May too, Jamie!

  3. You are certainly into your barechested men lately. XD

Well, the Sanderson (I mentioned on ine of your later post because I am comment vomiting backwards) I see is a sequel. Oh well, I'll see if the library has the first one. It's seminormal for us to get snow here in May, so I wasn't all that shocked with our weather, but it still wasn't a welcome sight for me either. That's for sure. :P

    1. I do it to scandalize the straight-laced neighbors. ;)

If this were any other year, it wouldn't be as big of a deal to me but having one arm semi-permanently attached to a cane means everything takes longer, including taking plant minions in. I used to go to Butte Montana every Fourth of July, where it was weirdly normal to have the occasional snow shower, even in July. O_o I like my snow seasonal, thanks very much.
